We know that a dog's bark is one way of sending a message, but there are actually several other ways of sending messages that are used to communicate between dogs.
Asking for the other dog's bottom
The reason why dogs actually sniff each other's butts is to say hello to the dog, as dogs use their sense of smell to tell things apart, and many dogs will sniff butts when they meet, whether they have just met or have known each other for a long time.
Licking each other's mouths
Sometimes when dogs are out playing and meet other dogs, they will lick the corners of their mouths. This is actually one of the ways in which dogs greet and communicate with each other, and usually dogs that will greet each other in this way are more affectionate.
Communicating with your tail
Normally, dogs will hide their tails and only reveal them in front of people they trust, or in the presence of a good playmate.
Urine as a marker
Dogs also communicate with each other by sniffing each other's urine, as dogs usually mark their things with their own mark, which is of course how they communicate with each other!
Barking to communicate
Dogs communicate by barking, changing the frequency, length and level of their howl to express their thoughts, as the level, whine or howl of a dog's bark can have different meanings.
