Teaching your budgie to talk

Find out how to talk to your budgie

When you teach your budgie to talk, it is important to pay attention not just to what you say, but also to how you say it. Learn to motivate him and he will respond more enthusiastically to you and learn to speak with you. If possible, try to keep your face as close to your budgie's as possible when teaching him to talk. He will stare intently at your beak when you speak, and may even put his face close to yours. When he focuses on your beak, his pupils will unconsciously dilate and you will know that he is in 'learning mode'.

Speak individual words to him

When you talk to him, repeat the names of different objects in the room, or say the names of other people or pets over and over again. Say "hello" to him when you meet him and "goodbye" to him when you leave the room. Repeating these words each time you meet or part with your pet will help him remember them and help him associate them with situations and actions.

Respond positively and praise him when he tries to speak

When a budgie starts to speak, the pronunciation may not be clear and you may not understand what he is saying. But whether you do or not, praise him enthusiastically, compliment him and repeat what he is 'saying' to you. If he asks for something through behaviour, you should respond to him with words. Responding with words and actions that match his body language will help him learn to speak!
